Teaching conflict resolution and teamwork in robotics with neurodiverse students

Despite the challenges faced by many social impact entrepreneurs, we approach each day with optimism, effort, and gratitude. Every day carries its moments that fortify us to stay the course as we strive towards sustainability. For me, one of my happiest moments is when I am amongst my students, learning, engaging, and facilitating knowledge.

Recently one of our 3rd graders approached our robotics class with a concerned face, and he responded; "My day was good. But, I - we, my team, and I have a dilemma.". 'Ok. What is it about?' I asked. "Well, we are trying to change our team so that we are 3 of us (as required). But, I don't know what we can do with the 4th member. I like working with X because he can help me (+the team) - he is good at coding, and I'm good at building a robot, I also want to work with Y because he is my best friend, but I feel sad for Z because I don't know what he can help the team with. So, I asked him to find another team and he does not want to."

'So, what are you guys planning to do about it?'. I understood the weight of the situation (he's done a SWOT analysis of his team), and I realized that Z would need support. He said, "I don't know Coach Emma. I really don't know what to do".

I suggested they come together as a collective and try to make some compromises. Long story short - a compromise was made, and Z felt empowered.

Conflict management and effective communication can be a challenge, but we are empowering your future employer/ employee at Kids Innovate Africa - Robotics with Neurodiverse with important life skills. Imagine how 'refined' they will be by the time they get to your payroll.
